Well life is sad. If you can protect yourself you should. The catch though is that all actions have consequences and I am guessing you are at the receiving end of a firewall and therefore the thought. I am sure you have firewalls of your own. People should. Otherwise you just let parasites destroy you/your things.

Sometimes they ARE NECESSARY. Do you want to take a risk or do you want to be safe?
A firewall's basic task is to regulate flow between people of different trust levels.
Typical examples are the Internet which is a zone with no trust and an internal network which is a zone of higher trust.
Firewalls are important :)
