For people who don’t know “alt-tag” – It’s the description of a web image, which pops-up when the cursor is moved over the image area.
Why? Because its user friendly.
1.) Makes sense, as it briefly describes the picture.
2.) People using low bandwidth connection, can see the image description if the image takes more time to load.
3.)People with physical disabilities using text readers.
4.)People using mobile devices.
5.)And last but not the least – “Search Engine Optimization”, which increases the visibility of a web page or site in Search Engine Result Pages(SERP).
Syntax for “alt attribute” or "alt tag":
Where myphoto.png is the image file with its description within inverted comas.

Hello there! Thanks for the tip. I realize that text descriptions of photos are important for anyone on the site who cannot see and is using a text reader device. You say they're also what portable devices use? Like BlackBerries? I'll try to use them from now on... :)
